Former PTI journalist Subramaniam passes away

L Subramaniam, veteran journalist and former Thiruvananthapuram Bureau Chief of PTI, died here today, family sources said.

He was 86 and is survived by four daughters.

Known as "LS" among colleagues and friends, Subramaniam had worked in Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kottayam bureaus of PTI before retiring as state capital bureau chief in 1987 after serving the organization for 38 years.

He had also worked as chief reporter in Indian Express here for three years after retirement.

A gifted journalist who handled politics and sports with equal felicity, Subramaniam had reported major political events and elections of Kerala as well as sporting events within and outside the state, including the Delhi Asiad.

A founder member of Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), Subramaniam had served as member of the Kerala Press Academy, state Press Advisory Committee and Press Accreditation panel.

He also served as the state vice president of KUWJ and was in the forefront of struggles of journalists in the state.

The cremation will take place here tomorrow.
