In a major relief to Tamil Nadu Governor Surjeet Singh Barnala's son, a local court here on Friday, acquitted former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA Gaganjeet Singh Barnala in a rape case.

The court of additional district and sessions judge RK Sondhi acquitted Barnala in a rape case registered against him in August 2006.

A middle-aged woman, who was working as a masseuse at Barnala's house when he was MLA in 2006, had alleged that she was raped by him but retracted from her accusation during the trial and told the court that she had fallen from her cycle on August 12, 2006 and thus sustained injuries.
