The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved four chairs in the name of RSS ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyay in four universities. The commission had in February last year asked for proposals from various universities for setting up the chair.

As per sources in the commission, the chairs have been approved for Central University of Jammu, Alagappa University in Tamil Nadu, Central University Himachal Pradesh, and North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon in Maharashtra.

UGC has so far established chairs in the name of 29 personalities.

In 2016, an expert committee of five members was formed to examine establishing chairs in the name of eminent personalities.

The committee of experts had recommended that Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Chair should be established by the Commission to study his socio-economic thoughts and 'Integral Humanism'. The commission will bear all expenses for the chair.

The body is set to examine the proposal of adding chairs in the name of Amul founder Varghese Kurien and founder of Jainism — Mahavir.
