Fresh war on ‘bad’ food in Ahmedabad on Monday

Health officials will start another round of checks for unhygienic food in sweet shops tomorrow.

Now that the festive season is over, sweet shop owners, who must be heaving a sigh of relief thinking that there will be no more checks from health officials of the civic body, are in for a surprise.

While it will be a surprise for them, it's good news for citizens, for officials of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) are again going to be on their toes - out to seek and destroy unhygienic food and leftovers in sweet shops and food joints.

Throughout the festive season, the health officials had carried out regular checking in various zones and wards and seized large quantities of unhygienic milk products, sweets kept uncovered and food packets having no date of manufacture and 'best before' dates.

Now that the festive season is over, the health officials of various zones have been instructed to carry out strict checking in the sweet shops and fast food joints. Sharing more information on this, an officer of AMC requesting anonymity said, "After Diwali, the sweet shops still use and sell leftovers which should be destroyed. Hence, to ensure good health of the citizens, we have been instructed to carry out rigorous checks and take strict action against the owners or vendors selling unhygienic food." He further said that they have been given clear instructions to throw and destroy the extra food at the sweet shops.

The officer added that the action plan has not been prepared yet due to the festive season and the weekends. "But once we get the instructions, we will start our checking and seize unhealthy food products," he added.
