From Badaun gang-rape to Meghalaya killing: When will crimes against women stop?

The public debate over increased crimes against women has once again been brought to the forefront, with the horrifying case of gang-rape and murder of two Dalit sisters in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh on May 28.
Once again the political elite, media, activists, and concerned citizens have engaged themselves in discussions to find “solutions to the social evil”. But the little impact that these discussions have had is evident from the number incidences of violence against women that have occurred since the Badaun gang-rape.

Below is a comprehensive list of incidences reported by dna, over the last week. And while this isn't even a fraction of gender crimes that have happened since May 28, it helps put the magnitude of the issue in perspective.

June 4: Woman conductor molested in State Transport bus in Dombivali, Mumbai
A 28-year-old woman conductor of a State Transport (ST) bus was molested at Dombivali on today. A passenger abused and tore the victim's dress and later tried to hit her. But the locals and other passengers caught him and handed him over to the police station.

June 4: Woman shot dead, head blown to pieces while trying to resist rape in Meghalaya
A woman's head was blown into pieces while she was resisting an alleged attempt of molestation and rape by suspected GNLA militants at Raja Rongat in South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, police said on Wednesday. The woman was at home with her husband and children when four to five armed militants of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) entered their house at around 6 pm on Tuesday. They locked up her husband and five children inside the house and pulled out the woman.

June 4: Six-year-old girl raped by neighbour in Uttar Pradesh, rushed to hospital
Police Superintendent S Chinappa said Girijesh Tewari (30), a neighbour of the victim, lured her to a secluded spot after promising her to give a chocolate on Monday and fled the scene after raping her. The profusely bleeding girl somehow reached home and was rushed to the district hospital from where she was referred to Gorakhpur medical college hospital when her condition deteriorated, the SP said.

June 3: Another teenage girl abducted, gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh
The girl was kidnapped by two people of her village on June 1 and was rescued here today, Superintendent of police Chandra Prakash said.

June 2: 22-year-old gang-raped, strangled to death after being forced to drink acid in Uttar Pradesh
A 22-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped after being forced to drink acid and later strangled to death in Bareilly on Monday. The incident took place in Baheri area of the city. The victim's body was recovered from a field in Aithpura village.

June 2: 69-year-old lady raped and murdered in her own residence in Goa
A 69-year-old lady was allegedly raped and murdered by unknown culprits at Santa Cruz village near Panaji

June 2: Three minors raped, one murdered in separate incidents in Rajasthan
A 14-year-old girl, a resident of Kholi village, had gone to graze her goats in forest area when she went missing since Saturday. She was found dead yesterday morning about a kilometre away from the village

June 1: Woman raped near Bhayandar railway station in Mumbai
A 29-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a man near Bhayandar railway station in the district, police said on Sunday. At least two people were involved in the crime that occurred on May 30.

May 31: 3-year-old girl raped by youth in Uttar Pradesh
According to an FIR lodged by the parents of the victim, a 17-year-old boy from their neighbourhood yesterday raped the girl, who was playing outside her home, by luring her to a secluded spot.

May 31: Man arrested for raping Dalit minor girl in Punjab
A man was arrested in Gurdaspur for allegedly raping a 13-year-old Dalit girl, police said.

May 30: Another Dalit girl gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh
The incident took place last night when four men allegedly caught the 17-year-old girl here and gang-raped her in a nearby field, they said.

May 30: 22-year-old molests a 32-year-old woman in Kalyan
A 32-year-old woman (Juliee Dixit) from Kalyan was molested in front of her son and her friend on May 28, near Laxmi market at Kalyan. The victim was stalked by the accused, Kiran Ashok Jambhale, 22, who also stays in Kalyan.

May 28: Badaun gang-rape and murder of two Dalit sisters
The two cousins, aged 14 and 12, were found hanging from a mango tree in their impoverished village last on Wednesday morning, with subsequent tests showing they had been the victim of multiple sexual assaults. The girls had apparently gone into the fields on Tuesday night to relieve themselves because their home, like most in Badaun district, did not have toilets.
