The Ahmedabad district court adjourned the case pertaining to Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani's abduction 17 years ago to August 22. Gautam Adani was allegedly abducted by underworld don Fazl-Ur-Rehman alias 'Fazlu Rehman', who is now lodged in Tihar Central Jail in New Delhi, 17 years ago. Earlier, the district court had ordered the Delhi police to produce Rehman before it to initiate proceedings of framing charges against him.

On Monday morning, the Delhi police produced Rehman in the court of Additional District Magistrate M C Tyagi, who after recording evidence, adjourned the hearing until August 22 since Rehman's lawyer sought some more time.

Rehman and two of his accomplices had allegedly abducted Gautam Adani in a car in 1997 from the outskirts of the city and released him after extorting Rs 15 crore as ransom at the behest of Dubai-based gangster Irfan Goga.

Rehman has been named as prime accused in several other high profile extortion cases in Ahmedabad, Delhi and Mumbai involving businessmen and industrialists. However, he remained out of the clutches of the law after he shifted his base to Dubai during the early 2000s.

In August 2006, the Delhi police arrested him from Indo-Nepal border. Since he was also wanted in Adani abduction case here, the city police took his custody and filed a charge sheet against him in the district court in 2009. Since the trial is yet to begin, the court sought his presence to initiate the process of framing charges against him.
