Meets the president to seek his removal
NEW DELHI: The ripples from Goa’s murky political waters have once again touched Delhi shores with the state BJP’s top brass knocking at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, demanding governor SC Jamir’s removal on the charge that he has been functioning in an “unconstitutional and biased” manner.
The Goa BJP’s top leaders met president Pratibha Patil to “apprise” her about Jamir’s misconduct. In a memorandum submitted to her, the delegation, comprising Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar and Goa BJP chief Shripad Naik drew Patil’s attention to the governor’s latest act of proroguing the assembly session on January 17, without it even transacting the financial business.
Apparently, Jamir had prorogued the assembly on the recommendation of the state cabinet. The party has furnished the minutes of the cabinet meeting to the president in which such a recommendation was made to prorogue the assembly, to be followed by an ordinance to increase the Contingency Fund limit from the existing Rs30 crore to Rs200 crore.
The party’s general secretary in-charge of Goa, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who also accompanied the delegation, said the assembly was prorogued to save the Congress government as it had been weakened after the resignation of three ministers and withdrawal of support by six MLAs.
The delegation also presented a letter signed by 2 lakh Goans demanding Jamir’s recall. They alleged that he has “maligned” the constitutional office by his “unconstitutional actions and partisan and politicised behaviour”.
Goa BJP general secretary Govind Parvatkar said the delegation apprised the president about the financial burden on the exchequer due to Jamir’s frequent travels to his home state Nagaland. Over Rs4 crore is being spend by Goa government on Jamir’s security and travel, he alleged.
