The accused had surrendered before the police after he managed to get anticipatory bail, and was subsequently subjected to medical test.

Goa police are on the lookout for John Fernandes, an accused in Russian girl rape case, whose anticipatory bail was cancelled by the high court on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Atmaram Deshpande told reporters that the crime branch has not been able to trace Fernandes, who is missing since the high court order.

Fernandes, a high profile politician from South Goa, is allegedly involved in raping a 25-year-old Russian girl at Colva beach on December 1.

Deshpande said that police have initiated all the required efforts to arrest the fugitive.

Sources confirmed that Colva police went to the accused's house where he was unavailable on Tuesday.

Police sources confirmed that they are yet to issue a Look-Out Circular (LOC) against the accused.

"He can't leave the nation, as he has deposited his passport to the crime branch," a senior police officer said.

Goa bench of Bombay high court had set aside the order of district and sessions court which had granted anticipatory bail to the accused.

State police, who are facing strong criticism for lethargy in investigating the case, had earlier refused to question the accused although the court had restrained only his arrest, and not questioning.

Deshpande was on record to state that the police were searching neither the accused nor his car, which was allegedly used in the offence.

The accused had surrendered before the police after he managed to get anticipatory bail, and was subsequently subjected to medical test.
