Goa registered its first dengue death for the year when a six year old boy residing in the
tourist hotspot of Calangute died in the state-run Goa Medical College hospital near here.
The health authorities said that the boy was initially admitted to a private hospital at Calangute after he started running fever and developed acute pain in the abdomen.
"This is the first case of dengue death in the state," said officer-in-charge of Vector Borne Diseases cell, Dr Dipak Kabadi.
The state has witnessed unprecedented dengue outbreak and the authorities attribute it to the migrants, many of whom live in unhygienic condition in shanties.
Dr Kabadi said that the boy died on Thursday after he was shifted to Goa Medical College hospital. He said that although the rapid test found the death was due to dengue, a sample has also been sent for Elisa test.
