In an initiative to improve the state of forensic science in the country, the home ministry has appointed a two-member team of consultants to examine the facilities of training and condition of laboratories.
Addressing his monthly press conference, home minister P Chidambaram today said state of forensic science as well as the state of the Central and State Forensic Science Laboratories "leave much to be desired" hence the year 2010 has been declared as the "Year of Forensic Science".
"A two-member team of consultants (Gopalji Sharma and Dr C Damodaran) has been appointed to examine thoroughly the state of forensic science teaching, training and laboratories and to submit two reports, an interim report by April 30, 2010 and a final report by July 31, 2010," he said.
The minister said based on these reports, steps will be undertaken to upgrade and strengthen forensic science.
"Based on the reports, it is my intention to upgrade and strengthen the forensic science institutions during the financial year 2010-11," he said.
