The ‘Walk the Line’ initiative, which the Delhi government claims to be the largest in the world, will deploy 800 junior engineers to scope out the city water network for leakage and contamination, according to an official statement.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) on Thursday launched an audit of the water utility infrastructure with an aim to ensure constant water supply in the national Capital.

The ‘Walk the Line’ initiative, which the Delhi government claims to be the largest in the world, will deploy 800 junior engineers to scope out the city water network for leakage and contamination, according to an official statement.

“The engineers would work in tandem with 3,500 staffers, who would be divided in teams comprising 4 to 5 members each. The engineers are also required to submit daily reports on broken pipelines, household contamination, valves and UGRs, besides suggesting solutions for each kilometer under their jurisdiction within 45 days,” Water Minister Kapil Mishra said.

He said the DJB will lay 3,500km of pipeline onto the existing infrastructure of 14,000km of pipeline to reach every household by December 2017. The initiative aims to achieve Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s vision of providing potable water in every part of the city by December 2017.
