A government office was set ablaze by unidentified miscreants in the heart of Shillong this morning, a day before the Khasi Students Union (KSU) sponsored three-day night blockade against the proposed uranium mining project begins.

Some three masked miscreants barged into the office of the Commandant of Civil Task Force located at Lachumiere here, poured petrol all over and set it on fire before fleeing, the night watchman deployed at the office said.

The watchman with the help of neighbours doused the fire but not before it had caused extensive damage inside the office. Most of the files and furniture were charred in the
inferno, official sources said.

The KSU has called for a three-night road blockade, starting from Tuesday as part of their agitation against the governments leasing of 422 hectares land to UCIL and allowing pre-project development work in West Khasi Hills district.

No arrests have been made so far in connection with today's incident, police said.
