For the first time, MS Golwalkar, the second supreme leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is going to be discussed on a government platform in the academic circles. He is the second most revered person in the Sangh after its founder KB Hedgewar.
The Indian Council for Philosophical Research (ICPR) which is a body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, set up to promote research in Philosophy and assist projects in the field, is organising a seminar to discuss Golwalkar's idea of 'nation and nationalism'.
According to the council, Golwalkar's idea of nationalism has been misunderstood and hence there is a need that "his views on nation and nationalism are understood in proper context in a holistic way and in the light of present day Indian and global scenario".
Golwalkar, who is revered and respected by Sangh leaders across the country has never been discussed on academic platforms of the government, because of his rigid views on Hinduism. In his book, 'Bunch of Thoughts', Golwalkar hails the glories of India and of Hinduism. Referring to those who are not Hindus, he claims 'hostile elements within the country pose a far greater menace to national security than aggressors from outside'.
'The Concepts of Nation and Nationalism in the thoughts of MS Golwalkar', is the topic of the seminar which is slated to be organised. Though a date for the seminar has not been decided yet, the council has called for entries on the subject till July 27. "The seminar aims at putting the views of MS Golwalkar in proper perspective since he has been much misunderstood and maligned by his adversaries. Golwalkar was a champion of robust nationalism. His views on nation and nationalism are to be understood in proper context in a holistic way and in the light of present day Indian and global scenario," reads an ICPR paper inviting entries for seminar.
"Golwalkar's conception can be regarded as enlightened nationalism when he talks of 'Hindu Rashtra'. It is not theocracy. Rather it it can be branded as 'Dharmocracy'. He emphasizes Dharma-centricity of Indian cultural ethos," it adds.
The council is hoping that with this seminar, scholars will revisit his thoughts in an unbiased manner and enlighten the people who may not be aware of his thoughts.
