Narhari Amin, who headed the team of 70 members at GU, alleged that the V-C had taken the decision to scrap candidature of Umang Soni from commerce seat in under graduate category under pressure from education minister Ramanbhai Vora.

Irked by the Gujarat University (GU) vice-chancellor Dr Parimal Trivedi's decision to cancel candidature of a representative of National Students Union of India (NSUI) in the upcoming student senate election, senior members of syndicate, senate and Congress party at the varsity met him urging him to revoke his decision.

Narhari Amin, who headed the team of 70 members at GU, alleged that the V-C had taken the decision to scrap candidature of Umang Soni from commerce seat in under graduate category under pressure from education minister Ramanbhai Vora. Amin and other members who visited Trivedi at the varsity headquarters also submitted a memorandum to revive Soni's candidature.

"Though the V-C has announced that the decision to scrap Soni's candidature was taken after seeking legal advice, we got to know that he did not take legal advice. He had cancelled the candidature after being pressurised politically," said Amin and others in the memorandum. In the memorandum, they also stated that Soni's form had the principal's stamp but the signature was missing.

"This is not student's fault and so his candidature should not be cancelled," stated the memorandum citing examples from municipal elections, assembly and other major elections.

The Congress members have also warned that if Soni's candidature is not revived, it will not take them long to convert GU campus into a wrestling ground.
