Spokespersons Jaynarayan Vyas and Saurabh Patel said that the transponder was allotted to Gujarat by the Centre after representations by the chief minister. Modi had written to the Prime Minister asking him to allot the transponder to the state.

The spokespersons said that the transponder will be used to deliver educational programmes to schools, colleges, universities and for imparting medical education, technical education and skill development. They said that the state has already successfully functionalised EDUSAT project through Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics for distance education. It was being developed under the observation of RR Navalgund, director, Space Applications Centre, ISRO, and a team of scientists.
