Gujarat police is busy gathering substantial evidences against Mohammad Omar Madni, a suspected operative of terror outfit Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT), so that it can get the custody of the accused and investigate his role in the recent terror attacks in the state.

A senior police officer told DNA, "We want to interrogate him, but we require substantial evidences against him to get his custody, which is a time-consuming affair."

A source in the Gujarat police said, "Since Madni is a key operative of LeT, we are eager to interrogate him to ascertain whether he had any plan to set up a base here."
Police officials from the state were in touch with their Delhi counterparts as Gujarat had always been on the list of LeT's target, the officer said, adding that the cops also wanted to check out if he had played any role in the Ahmedabad serial blasts, which took place last July and killed more than 50 innocent people.

"Madni is believed to be involved in the process of recruiting people for carrying out terror activities in the country. So, we will also probe if he had recruited people from the state in the past or he was in touch with anyone in Gujarat," he added.

Madni, arrested from New Delhi, was on a mission to recruit some persons for the outfit from metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. He has reportedly provided vital inputs regarding LeT operatives working against India with base in Nepal.

Teams from Mumbai police are likely to be sent to Delhi question Madni in connection with the 2006 serial train blasts case and other cases. "We are in touch with Delhi Police authorities and after getting more information from them, we will be sending a team to interrogate him,” additional director general (Anti-Terrorism Squad) KP Raghuvanshi said .
