The state’s first ‘Gujarat Knowledge Centre’ at Gandhinagar will soon make all information you require at your finger tips. The centre, which will start soon, will prove to be remedy all grievances of lack of resources giving people access to a vast variety of information.
Dr AF Sheikh, director of libraries said, “The objective of the state knowledge centre will provide all kinds of information to the common people, which are currently not available to them from information centres, libraries or the internet. The state knowledge centre will help them getting the information. Suppose a women’s group involved in village craft wants to sell their handicraft and other products but does not know who the prospective buyers will be in the state, country or at the international level, can now avail required information from this knowledge centre. It will serve many more purposes like giving access to rare books etc.”
The director of the Delhi-based Institute ‘Delnet’ (an acclaimed library network developing agency promoted by the government of India), Dr Kaul has been appointed as an expert to suggest planning of the knowledge centre. He has suggested recruitment of technical staff for the knowledge centre.
The National Institute of Design (NID) has designed the knowledge centre, while Delnet has developed its database and software, said Dr Sheikh. “We have put around 35 knowledge terminals from where people can access the information. This service will be offered totally free. We will charge nominal amount for photocopy only. Initially the information will be available from Gandhinagar centre only but very soon the knowledge centre’s service will be available at all the district libraries’” he said, further adding that all district government libraries have been computerised and will be connected with the state knowledge centre soon.
