Three people die in shootout among rival gangs
NEW DELHI: Living up to its disrepute as the crime capital of India, Delhi has witnessed three major shootouts in the last three days beginning Monday, with the toll swelling to six.
Three people were gunned down in a suspected case of gang rivalry in the national capital on Wednesday morning.
Police said two motorcycle-borne unidentified assailants drove close to Sahim Chaudhary, 30, when he was standing with his friends near Seelampur Police Station and pumped three bullets into him. Chaudhary’s friends, who were apparently carrying guns, instantly retaliated, killing the assailants on the spot. They fled the scene of crime soon after.
The victims were rushed to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Police claimed it was a case of gang rivalry and said there were criminal cases pending against Chaudhary.
Deputy commissioner of police (northeast Delhi) Jaspal Singh said, “We have registered a case and a hunt is on for Chaudhary’s friends. The other two victims will be identified soon. We are also trying to confirm whether the weapons used in the crime were licensed or not.”
A day earlier, Mahesh Kapur, an accountant at a mobile phone showroom in east Delhi, was shot dead by two unidentified men outside his Vikas Marg office in broad daylight after he resisted their attempt to rob a bag full of cash. The incident took place a stone’s throw away from the Delhi police headquarters. The assailants pumped nine bullets into Kapur and fled.
Late on Monday, two brothers were gunned down in the Ballimaran area of Old Delhi by their neighbours.
