IPS officer YC Modi, currently a member of the Supreme Court-appointed SIT which has been investigating some of the Godhra riot cases, was the supervising officer of the case. He is believed to be close to the SIT chief RK Raghavan and is currently supervising important riot cases.

The exact reason why Gupta took voluntary retirement is not known but sources in the police said that his taking VRS had surprised all. The sources also said that Gupta was in his late 30s when he left the probe agency.

"There was no need for Gupta to take VRS as he was doing very well in the CBI," a source said. Gupta had submitted the charge sheet in the designated POTA court.
