Heat stroke claims crocodile pair in Raipur zoo

The male and female crocodile pair was six-year-old and doctors have taken out 16 eggs from the womb of the female crocodile.

Soaring heat has caused the death of a crocodile pair in Nanadanvan zoo at Chidiyaghar here, forest department officials said here today.
       
The officials told PTI that unable to bear the heat the crocodiles yesterday had got into the nearby lake, but their condition deteriorated further. After that they were taken to a hospital in Chidiyaghar, where the two crocodiles died, they said.
       
Quoting the post-mortem report, the officials said that heat stroke has caused the death of the crocodiles. The male and female crocodile pair was six-year-old and doctors have taken out 16 eggs from the womb of the female crocodile. Parts of the crocodiles' bodies have been sent to Crocodile Institute of Research in Raebareli for a thorough investigation, they added.
       
Extreme heat condition is prevailing in Chhattisgarh, and the number of heat stroke patients in hospitals was on the rise. Professor Devpriya Lakada at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College here said that the number of heat stroke patients was increasing and most of the patients are children and labourers who work in hot sun.
       
Lakada added that at least 12 heat stroke patients were visiting Dr Bheemrao Ambedkar Hospital here daily.
       
According to Met office in Raipur, state's Bilaspur and Raipur areas have been recorded 45 degrees Celsius and this may increase further in coming days.
