A government hospital in Patna turned into a pond and fishes were seen swimming beneath the patients' beds in the wards, following heavy rains which lashed Patna in the last 48 hours.
Severe water-logging was reported from Patna's Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, a premier state-run hospital, including the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital, and doctors, paramedical staff and attendants had to wade through ankle to knee-deep water to reach the patients.
A video footage of fishes swimming in the flood waters at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) went viral in the media, but the situation was far worse as some electric equipment were shut down and power connectivity was disrupted fearing electrocution or other mishaps. A source said patients found it difficult to leave their beds to even use the washrooms.
The hospital administration said they were using motors to pump out extra water, but a senior doctor rued that situation was similar almost every monsoon as some or the other part of the 100 acre hospital campus gets submerged.
With many areas of the city submerged in rainwater and the meteorological department forecasting for moderate to heavy showers in till Tuesday, Patna district magistrate Kumar Ravi ordered for closure of all government and private schools (up to Class XII) in the district on Monday.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, along with road construction minister Nand Kishore Yadav and senior officials took stock of the situation. "We will look into the causes of the accident. Experts will be roped in to check alignment, ground water level and other technicalities as the road also falls on the metro route apart from the flyover," the CM said.
There were flash floods in several localities in the state capital. Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi's residence, too, was flooded following the incessant rains. A large section of Bailey road near an under-construction 'Lohia Pathchakra' caved in due to the rains and water-logging, resulting in disruption.
