The Mumbai Marathon took place on Sunday with a lot of excitement and encouragement from thousands of by-standers. The marathon had with six categories - Amateur Marathon, DHL CC and police cup, Half Marathon, Elite marathon, Champions with Disability, Senior Citizens Run and Dream Run - kick starting at different time and different points, mostly CST.
There were 162 participants in the elite category and 5,028 in the indian elite category for the overall marathon while 14431 participants for the half marathon. The total prize money given away to the contestants in this year's marathon is $3,77,000.
Gideon Kipketer from Kenya won the elite men category of 42.195 km in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 35 seconds by breaking the record of Ugandan Kiprop of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 32 seconds which was made in 2013. Seboka Dibaba from Ethopia came second and completed the race in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 20 seconds and Marius Kimutai from Kenya came third at 2 hours, 9 minutes and 20 seconds.
Kipketer maintained lead since the beginning of the marathon and seemed to be enjoying the race by waving and smiling at the crowd, occasionally looking behind to check if another contestant is near. Dibaba finished after almost one minute after Kipketer, who was awarded $41,000. Dibaba was awarded $21,000 while Kimutai got $15,000.
Shuko Genemo won the first position in the women category of overall marathon, completing the race in 2 hours, 27 minutes, 50 seconds. The second and third positions are backed by Bornes Kitur and Valentine Kipketer respectively.
Winners of half marathon are Deepak Bapu Kumbhar in the first place at 1 hour, 6 minutes and 1 second, Belliappa Ab at second place in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 37 seconds and Indrajeet Patel in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 59 seconds.
On the women front, the first position was backed by Monika Raut in 1 hour, 17 minutes and 20 seconds, second position by Manisha Salunkhe in 1 hour, 19 minutes and 17 seconds. Monika Athare stood third, completing the race in 1 hour, 20 minutes and 8 seconds.
