To meet the increasing demand for masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kerala government has come up with a unique way to deal with the problem.
Pinarayi Vijayan government in Kerala is taking the help of prison inmates at Thiruvananthapuram, Viyyur and Kannur central prisons to meet the increasing demand for masks.
Taking to Twitter on Saturday Kerala Chief Minister Pinararyi Vijayan said that his government had come up with a solution to the problem.
Tweeting pictures of the first batch of face masks manufactured by the prisoners at Thiruvananthapuram Jail, the CM said, "In light of the shortage, directions were given to engage the prisons in the state in manufacturing masks. He added the manufacturing of the masks has started on a "war footing basis".
The mask made by tailoring units of prisons is the two-layered cotton masks are washable and thus reusable. They have been priced at Rs 15-20 apiece.
As reported by The Print, prisoners churned out 6,000 masks in 2 days to cut the shortage.
After the Kerala CM shared the image, it went viral on social media. It has garnered more than 21k likes and 4.9k retweets. People couldn't stop themselves from appreciating the idea.
However, some felt that these masks won't be effective in this pandemic.
