Hindutva still BJP's main agenda: Prakash Karat

CPI-M today said BJP's manifesto clearly indicated that the party's Hindutva agenda remains in the "forefront" of its programmes.

Mention of exploring the possibility for construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya, abrogation of Article 370 and striving for a common civil code makes it clear that Hindutva programmes were very much on BJP's agenda, CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat told a meet-the-press programme here. "The party has not put the Hindutva agenda in the backburner and it is very much in forefront," he said, adding BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi contesting from Varanasi was a symbol that reminds the party's slogan 'after Ayodhya, (it is) Kashi and Mathura'.

Rejecting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's remarks that CPI-M's ideology reversed growth, he said Singh had to explain to the nation how the economic growth rate in the country came down in the recent years.

Stating that there was an anti-Congress wave in the country he, said Congress' performance was going to be worst since 1999. On the post poll scenario, Karat said a situation similar to the one in 1999 where a United Front was formed would emerge.

Congress will have to take a decision whether to support such a front as the party says it wants to keep BJP away from power, he said. Karat also discounted the possibility of Congress forming a government with the support of other parties and asked how a party which was defeated could form a government? Non-Congress secular parties would come together after polls for an alternative to Congress and BJP, he added.
