Delhi on Saturday witnessed the hottest day with harsh heatwaves making the mercury to cross the 45-degree celsius mark. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the temperature may go up to 46-degree Celsius and the capital will have no rainfall until May 28.
The weather agency further said the heatwaves will continue over Delhi-NCR for three or four more days due to the dry northwesterly winds.
The mercury will only come down at the end of May due to possible rainfall and duststorm between May 29 and 31.
As per IMD, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature is 45 degrees Celsius for two consecutive days in a large area it becomes while severe heatwave is when the mercury touches the 47 degrees Celsius-mark for two days in the area.
Similarly, in small areas, like Delhi, a heatwave is declared if the temperature soars to 45 degrees Celsius even for a day, according to the IMD.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan's Churu and Ganganagar recorded 46.6 degrees celsius on Saturday.
On Friday, Delhi recorded its highest temperature of the season as the mercury crossed 45 degrees Celsius-mark in Palam area.
