Subramanium was pushed to the wall by telecom minister Kapil Sibal’s move to engage a personal lawyer to defend the scam-hit ministry in the Supreme Court.

Solicitor general Gopal Subramanium is in no mood to relent though PM Manmohan Singh has asked him to stay on. Perhaps, similar advice was given by president Pratibha Patil whom he met on Sunday.

Subramanium had switched off his phones on Sunday. He was pushed to the wall by telecom minister Kapil Sibal’s move to engage a personal lawyer to defend the scam-hit ministry in the Supreme Court.

A day before an SC bench comprising justices GS Singhvi and AK Ganguly took up a batch of applications and affidavits with allegations against Sibal, attorney general Goolam E Vahanvati and Reliance Infocom owner Anil Ambani, the SG’s resignation has come as a setback for the government.
