Delhi Police claimed to have averted a series of explosions in the national capital with the arrest of a Pakistan-trained militant of Harkat-ul- Jehadi Islami (HuJI).

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police claimed on Thursday to have foiled an attempt by Bangladeshi terror outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad Islami (HuJI) to carry out bomb blasts in the capital.

In a development that could bolster the probe into the May 13 Jaipur blasts, the sleuths claimed to have arrested suspected HuJI militant Abdul Rehman late on Wednesday night and recovered 3.1 kg of RDX.

Delhi Police's special cell nabbed Rehman from Chelmsford Road near New Delhi Railway Station, shortly after his arrival from West Bengal.

"Rehman, already accused in the March 2006 Varanasi serial blasts, was sent by HuJI commanders in Bangladesh to carry out bomb blasts in the capital. He arrived here from Kolkata on the Howrah-New Delhi Express on Wednesday night and was arrested soon after," joint commissioner of police (special cell) Karnal Singh said.

Rehman revealed he had hidden 3.1 kg of RDX in an open space near a mosque in West Delhi, which was recovered early on Thursday. Singh said apart from the RDX, five detonators and a timer device that could trigger a blast even after 194 days of being set were also recovered.
