Sleuths of Income-Tax department raided 26 places in Kolkata on Saturday. Cash and jewellery worth Rs 10 crore were seized. One of the big names that appeared on the agency’s raid list was Prabhuji Agarwal, the owner of Haldiram’s.
The sleuths said there has been a tax evasion of over Rs 150 crore by the owners of the company. Residence and sho-wroom of Haldiram’s on VIP Road, offices of owners of Sanwaria and Kasera Groups were raided, an I-T official said.
Jai Bhagwan Agarwal and Mahavir Agarwal, owners of the Sanwaria Group and Anil Kasera, Rajesh Kasera and Preeti Kasera of Kasera Group have been accused of heavy tax evasion. “We have seized Rs 10 crore in cash and a lot of jewellery. Along with diamonds and gold as much as 80 kg of silver have been confiscated from one place only,” said the IT official. He said the raids began Friday and continued till Saturday.
