India is a safe destination and all visitors are welcome, Union home minister P Chidambaram said on Thursday, reacting sharply to the travel advisory issued by the United States to its citizens in India.
On June 2, the US embassy in New Delhi published an advisory on its website, urging its nationals to be careful while travelling in India in view of the heightened risk of terror attacks in the country.
Chidambaram said he would ask the external affairs ministry to take up the matter with Washington, DC.
The advisory read: “The US mission in India wishes to urgently remind all US citizens resident in or travelling to India that there is a high threat from terrorism throughout India. As terror attacks are a serious and growing threat, US citizens are urged to always practise good security, including maintaining a heightened situational awareness and a low profile.”
It adds that Americans in India should be vigilant and monitor local news reports and vary their routes and times in carrying out daily
activities.
A US embassy spokesperson called it a “routine advisory”.
