Exhibiting organic infrastructure, students of Green Club at Daly College created an eco-friendly green demonstration centre.
Students have made this organic building from Rs 10 lakh which they won at the national-level Green-I Contest in Chennai. Managed by the club of 40 members studying in classes 7-12 has conceptualised the organic building whose ceiling is made up of earthen pots.
The Mukesh Jhaveri Green Centre of the school is based on a complete organic model. The earthen pots that are inverted and cemented on the roof help in maintaining low temperature inside the room in all seasons thereby suspending the need for fans and other cooling devices.
“Students of the Green Club of our school have conceptualised the earthen pot roof after discussing with architects,” said Shubhra Bhatnagar, a Green Club member and 10th grader.
Explaining the simple science behind this organic building, another member of Green Club, a class 11th student of Daly College Viraj Govindani said, “Clay absorbs the heat that is radiated from the sun and does not let it penetrate it through the cemented roof”. The roof is covered by hay that further absorbs the heat of the sun.
“The best part about this is that the temperature is always same in all seasons and since there are no fans, the electricity consumption is reduced,” said the excited duo.
Not just the roof alone, but the entire green centre has unique organic fixtures. The building gets the entire electricity supply from the multiple solar cells that are installed on the terrace. The capacity of these panels is 6.45KW. The centre also has a paper recycling unit that is solely operated by students.
“After processing the paper pulp in this machine we dry it in the sun and get recycled paper that is used for making the students’ dairy in our school,” said students Rishabh Shriman and Vaibhav Parik. The building has solar energy setup on the terrace . It also has a vegetable garden that uses organic manure collected from the school campus.
