Five militants and an army officer were killed and two jawans injured as troops today foiled a major infiltration bid near the Line of Control in Gurez sector of Kashmir Valley.
A large group of heavily-armed militants was trying to sneak into the Gurez Valley from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir when they were noticed by troops.
The militants were challenged by the soldiers, leading to a gunbattle.
"Five militants have been killed so far and the operation is in progress," Defence Spokesman Lt Col J S Brar said.
He said a lieutenant was also killed while two soldiers were injured in the operation.
This is one of the biggest infiltration bid by militants
from PoK this year.
Attempts by militants to infiltrate from PoK into the valley have increased as the natural passes along the LoC will be soon closed with the onset of winter.
