Senior NCP leader and former Speaker PA Sangma, who was once in the lead in raising the issue of Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin, is now critical that prime minister Manmohan Singh is not from Lok Sabha.
"I am a strong believer of the Parliamentary system of governance, but in the last several years, I have been a very disappointed man. For years Lok Sabha has failed to produce a prime minister."
"In 1996 elections, we had to borrow a chief minister from the state of Karnataka (H D Deve Gowda) for the prime ministerial post. In 2004, we failed to have a prime minister from Lok Sabha. In 2009 again, the Lok Sabha failed to find a prime minister which forced the country to choose premier (Manmohan Singh) from the Rajya Sabha," he said.
"I firmly believe that in Parliamentary system, a country must elect its prime minister from the Lower House," Sangma said, addressing a state-level convention of the party last evening.
