Tankha will hope the result is different from 2014, when he was trounced by 2.09 lakh votes. Congress has recovered the ground to an extent in Assembly election, though overall BJP polled more votes than the grand old party. The assembly segments under Jabalpur are Patan, Bargi, Jabalpur East, Jabalpur North, Jabalpur Cantt, Jabalpur West, Panagar and Sihora.

Jabalpur, the capital of Mahakaushal region has long been a BJP bastion. The party has been winning the seat since 1996. BJP's Baburao Paranjape had won the seat four times, same as Congress leader Seth Govind Das who was MP from 1957 to 1974. Interestingly, Sharad Yadav was MP of Jabalpur from 1974 to 1980.

PM Modi in campaign trail came to Jabalpur and attacked Kamal Nath government saying "In less than six months of Congress coming to power, the state of governance is at an all-time low in Madhya Pradesh. The power situation is bad. Farm loan waiver hasn't been done despite being promised. This shows why people must never vote for Congress!".

Taking jibe at Kamal Nath's foreign tour and expense incurred, Modi said, "His (Kamal Nath) priorities include jet-setting to Switzerland immediately after elections, leaving all administrative work, just to establish his own dynasty and of course, corruption. Very sad state of affairs." Rahul Gandhi too campaigned in Jabalpur. Over 17 lakh voters will decide the fate of the candidates on April 29.

Voting for 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh are being held in 4 phases. In the first phase Balaghat, Chhindwara. Jabalpur. Mandla, Shahdol and Sidhi are going to polls. BJP won 27 out of 29 Lok Sabha seats in the last Lok Sabha election. In the 2018 Assembly polls, where BJP lost, the party was ahead in 17 Lok Sabha seats.
