Demanding the resignation of Jadavpur University Vice Chancellor Abhijit Chakraborty, West Bengal PCC president Adhir Chowdhury on Thursday condemned the 'police attack' on JU students. "We condemn the brutal attack on students by police. This is a shame for all of us. We want the VC of Jadavpur University to step down immediately," Chowdhury said.
Police had entered the university and lifted the gherao of Vice-chancellor Abhijeet Chakrabarty and Registrar Pradip Ghosh by the students in the early hours of Wednesday. The students had taken the VC and Registrar Pradip Ghose hostage on Tuesday evening demanding an independent probe into the sexual harassment of a girl student inside a boy's hostel on August 28.
Chakrabarty had said yesterday he might have been killed had not the police come to his rescue shortly after the 35 arrested students were freed by police in the early hours of Wednesday. A section of JU students had lodged a police complaint against Chakrabarty and Jadavpur police station officer-in-charge Vijay Kumar Singh accusing them of molesting girl students while forcibly lifting the gherao in the early hours of Wednesday.
