Jail authorities informed Indrani about her mother's death in the presence of her lawyer.

Main accused in the Sheena Bora murder case Indrani Mukerjea was given the news of her mother's death by the jail authorities on Friday. Indrani's mother passed away on October 1 in Guwahati, and on October 2 Indrani was taken to JJ hospital after she fainted inside the jail early in the morning.

Jail authorities informed Indrani about her mother's death in the presence of her lawyer.

"We had to tell her as we can't keep such information hidden for too long. Hence, we decided to break the news in front of her lawyer," said special inspector general (prisons) Bipin Kumar Singh.

"We also had a counsellor present who helped Indrani deal with the emotional trauma."

Indrani, who was hospitalised on October 2 and discharged recently, was not aware of the demise of her mother Durga Rani Bora. "There was no way she could have come to know about it as she had no access to any news, and our staff too did not know about it. So fortunately, there was no abrupt revelation of this information," said Singh.

"We have shifted her to another barrack. She has been detected with chronic ischeimia and is undergoing treatment for it." He added that Indrani had responded well to the medicine.

Interestingly, Indrani has written four letters to Peter Mukerjea since her incarceration and received two from him. "She is allowed to write letters... It's all personal; sharing the contents of the letters with the media will not be appropriate," said Singh.
