Kanniyakumari Lok Sabha Constituency

The Kanniyakumari Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies going to vote in Tamil Nadu. The vote will be cast during the 2nd phase on April 18 and counting will be done on May 23.

There’s an epic battle on the cards with Union Minister of State for Finance and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan, the current sitting MP taking on Vashthakumar of Congress who is one of the richest politicians. He lost to Pon Radhakrishan in 2014 but those were different times with votes getting split between BJP, Congress, AIADMK, DMK and CPI(M) candidates.

In 2014, out of the total 9.91 lakh votes, Radhakrishan got 3.72 lakh votes, while Vasanthakumar managed 2.44 lakh votes, followed by AIADMK’s D John Thanakam (1.76 lakh), DMK’s FM Rajarathinam (1.17 lakhs ) and CPI(M) candidate AV Bellarmin (35,284 votes.

All seats in Tamil Nadu are going to vote on April 18. They are Arakkonam, Arani, Chennai Central, Chennai North, Chennai South, Chidambaram, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Erode, Kallakurichi, Kancheepuram, Kaniyakumari, Karur, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Perambalur, Pollachi, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Sivaganga , Sriperumbudur, Tenkasi, Thanjavur, Theni, Thoothukkudi, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Viluppuram, Virudhunagar, Tiruvallur.

There’s an interesting battle on the cards with an AIADMK-led NDA alliance with the BJP, PMK, DMDK, Puthiya Neethi Katchi and Puthiya Tamizhagam.  Meanwhile the Congress has forged alliances with DMK, two communist parties and other regional parties. Smaller partners include VCK, IUML and KMK.

The AIADMK under Jayalalithaa had managed to win 37 seats, with BJP and PMK getting 1 each. The Congress and the DMK ended up with zero seats in 2014.
