As concerns over Karunanidhi's condition mounted, a general alert was sounded across the state.

A Chennai hospital on Tuesday announced that ailing DMK president M Karunanidhi passed away. Karunanidhi was admitted to Chennai's Kauvery Hospital on July 28.

Earlier the hospital had said that Karunanidhi's health was 'extremely critical'.

"There has been significant decline in the clinical condition of Kalaignar M Karunanidhi over the last few hours. Despite maximum medical support, his vital organ functions continue to deteriorate," Hospital Executive Director Dr Aravindan Selvaraj said in a bulletin.

"His condition is extremely critical and unstable," it said.

Security was stepped at major installations including at the Kauvery Hospital and the Gopalapuram residence of the nonagenarian leader. As the crowd at the hospital swelled by the minute, the security has been increased and the main entrance has been completely barricaded.
