Kawant tense, but under control; BSF officer’s body cremated

Situation is still volatile in the entire Kawant area, after the death of a BSF officer in police custody on Friday. The Vadodara district police have kept heavy security at Kawant and Hamidpura area to thwart any violent incident. On the other hand, after autopsy, the body of the BSF soldier was taken to his native place for last rites.

The death of BSF soldier Nuriyabhai Rathwa at the hands of the police officials at the Kawant police station has created havoc in the entire state. Reacting to the incident, residents of the area attacked the police station with heavy stone pelting, targeting the police officials. In reply police had to fire teargas shells to control the situation.

Senior officials including the DSP of Vadodara region have rushed to the spot and an FIR was lodged against 11 police officials of the police station, including the PSI of Kawant police station, RS Chauhan. Vadodara’s regional collector issued orders for postmortem to be conducted at Vadodara-based SSG hospital which was conducted by a panel of doctors and video recorded.

The viscera have been sent to Surat for detail investigations and report is awaited.  The body was later handed over to the relatives.

Looking at the aggressive reaction from citizens at Hamidpura and Kawant region, police have set up stringent security measures.

Situation in Kavant though under control is still tense.

Talking to DNA, DSP BS Jebaliya said, “The situation is under control. We have put adequate security personnel to rule out any possibility of any incident.”

The funeral procession of Nuriyabhai Rathwa was held under tight police security late evening. The district police have put PSI RS Chauhan under leave reserve.
