Delhi Police have arrested Ajay Sangwan, 23, the alleged killer of Gagandeep Singh, the under-19 cricketer who was shot in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, on October 10 last year.
The rising cricket star was killed after he got caught in a fight between a shopkeeper and a customer.
Delhi Police got information that Ajay was visiting the capital to meet an associate somewhere on Ring Road in south Delhi. He was arrested after a brief encounter.
“During interrogation, Ajay told us that he had a fight with Shahnawaj, the owner of an eatery in Meerut, after he was not served kebabs on time. He returned with his .32 gun, associate Rahul and started firing. When the cricketer tried to intervene, he was shot dead,” Alok Kumar, deputy commissioner of police
(special cell), said.
Ajay has been named an accused in 14 cases of kidnapping, extortion, robbery and murder, Kumar said. He studied up to Class 12 at Guru Teg Bahadur Public School in the Delhi Cantonment area.
His brother Raj, a wellknown criminal, is lodged in Tihar Jail.
Gagandeep had represented India in an Under-19 series in Australia. He was in Meerut to play the CK Naidu tournament.
