Exactly 52 months after buying Air Deccan, India’s pioneering low-cost airline from entrepreneur GR Gopinath, Vijay Mallya has decided to shut down the growing business — low-cost carrier Kingfisher Red — and continue a stalling one — the full-service carrier Kingfisher Airlines.
“We do not wish to compete in the low-cost segment,” Mallya said. His reason: there are enough who prefer to travel with all the luxuries that full service Kingfisher class has to offer.
Kingfisher has never managed to notch up a profit since it was founded in 2005.
