Security around the heritage building was beefed up immediately after the mail was received at the police headquarters at nearby Lalbazar and a search was conducted by Kolkata Police officers.

Kolkata Police on Tuesday afternoon received an anonymous mail this afternoon threatening to blow off the 200-year-old Writers' Buildings, which was the West Bengal secretariat and is now being renovated. The bomb threat turned out to be a hoax.

Following the bomb threat mail, Lalbazar, which is the Kolkata Police headquarters sent a Bomb Disposal Squad and sniffer dogs to the spot. Offices of ministers were immediately evacuated and employees were asked to wait outside the building.

Police officials carried out a thorough search across the building and could not find any bomb.

“We receive such e-mails on a daily basis, but we do not take it lightly. Similarly, we carried out thorough search and found no such bombs were planted inside the building. We are trying to find out who had sent the hoax e-mail,” Special Additional and Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Headquarters), Rajeev Mishra told dna.
