The Durga Puja theme for a Kolkata-based club this year will be based on the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Padmaavat, it was revealed on Sunday.
As per information, the Sreebhumi Sporting Club in the eastern part of Kolkata has gone ahead and chosen the theme for Durga Puja that will be held in October this year.
“Our themes are based on the hottest topics of the year, and this year that is Padmaavat. We have decided that the pandal will be designed keeping the Chittor palace in the film in mind,” said Sujit Bose, a TMC MLA from Bidhannagar constituency, who is part of the organising committee.
Last year, the pandal had opted for a theme based on the blockbuster film Bahubali 2 and had drawn a record crowd.
While Bose did not disclose the budget for the pandal, sources told DNA that it usually crosses Rs 1 crore. Bose added that the theme for the pandal would soon be formally announced.
Sources have said that this is West Bengal’s way to show that it would not be cowed down by elements, who threatened to cancel the screening of the film in various parts of the country.
Amidst pre-release violence and even after the intervention of the Supreme Court, the film which was supposed to be released on December 1, 2017 had to be deferred to January 26, 2018. Padmavat had, however, proved to be a box office hit.
Earlier on November 24, 2017, when the fate of the film was uncertain, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had welcomed makers of the film to Bengal. “If they are unable to release the film in any other state, we are ready to make special arrangements for it in our state. Bengal will be happy and proud to do it. Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his Padmaavat team are welcome here,” Mamata said at an event.
