Minister for external affairs SM Krishna will be heading to Tokyo on Friday for the third round of strategic dialogue between India and Japan to be held later this week. Krishna will also call on Japan prime minister Taro Aso.

North Korea’s decision to go ahead with another underground nuclear test and terror attacks on Mumbai are the issues likely to be discussed at the meet. Issues related to the civil nuclear co-operation between India and Japan will also be discussed.

Initially, Tokyo had opposed India’s nuke tests and the civil agreement. However, at the NSG meet, Japan backed the lifting of restrictions which banned India from being a part of nuclear trade group.

After France, Japan is said to have one of the most efficient and sophisticated nuclear technology. In fact, Japanese MNCs like Toshiba are interested in getting some of India’s nuclear business.
Krishna and his Japanese counterpart Hirofumi Nakasone will review the ties between the two countries.

The UPA had not been able to make much headway with infrastructure projects in their last term. Hence, this time they plan to focus on fast tracking some key projects like the Mumbai-Delhi industrial corridor project.

One of the most ambitious projects between India and Japan, the Mumbai-Delhi industrial corridor project, is spread across Maharashtra, MP, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi and UP. The project will see major expansion of infrastructure and industry – including industrial clusters and rail, road, port, air connectivity.
