The CJI-led bench of the Supreme Court will be hearing the plea seeking a high-level judicial probe in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.
The Supreme Court will be hearing the plea regarding the Lakhimpur Kheri matter, where eight people were killed during a farmers’ protest after acts of violence erupted in the area, on Wednesday, October 20.
The SC bench that will be hearing the matter comprises Chief Justice of India N V Ramana, Justice Surya Kant, and Justice Hima Kohli. The bench had earlier heard the matter pertaining to the Lakhimpur Kheri violence on October 8, and the case was further adjourned to October 20.
The bench had earlier expressed their discontent with the explanation provided by the Uttar Pradesh government in this matter. The court had said that the Uttar Pradesh government had not taken necessary steps in the ‘brutal’ murder of eight people, during the previous hearing.
The apex court, today, will be hearing the Lakhimpur Kheri matter after a couple of lawyers wrote a letter to the CJI, seeking a high-level judicial probe involving the CBI in the incident. One of the prime accused in the case is Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra's son Ashish Mishra.
Till now, ten people, including Ashish Mishra, have been arrested by the UP police in this case. The arrest of Ashish Mishra happened six days after the incident, after sharp criticism from the opposition, who claimed that no action is being taken against the accused due to his high political status.
On October 3, incidents of violence erupted in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh after a car mowed down protestors while visiting Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. The protestors were holding a demonstration against the new farm laws introduced by the Centre.
The angry protestors on site allegedly beat two BJP workers and a driver to death after the incident took place. A local journalist was also reportedly killed in the violence. The UP government had assured the Supreme Court in the last hearing that all the necessary action will be taken in the case.
