Leh cloudburst: Special plane to carry telecom equipment affected areas

The Tri-service Disaster Management Coordination Group reviewed the ongoing rescue operations in the city and briefed defence minister about the steps being taken to provide succour to the affected in Leh.

Satellite telecom equipment will be flown in special aircraft to Leh to restore the mobile and telephone connectivity in the city and adjoining areas, where communication services came to a halt due to a devastating cloudburst.

"The Tri-service Disaster Management Coordination Group today decided to send special service aircraft to carry 19 VSATs (Very Small Aperture Terminals) and other equipment of BSNL to Leh so that mobile and telecom connectivity could be restored there," defence ministry officials said in New Delhi.

The group also reviewed the ongoing rescue operations in the city and briefed defence minister about the steps being taken to provide succour to the affected in Leh.

"In the meantime, two INMARSATs have been provided to Leh district administration for meeting immediate communication requirements," they added.
