Fines, paltry as they are, never deter Amdavadis from breaking the rules.
Well here is a shocker. The next time you dump garbage near the airport be ready to shell out as much as Rs1 lakh.
The steep fine will be charged from you if the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation decides to follow the regulations amended by the National Bird Control Committee (NBCC).
Ahmedabad, along with Mumbai, Delhi and Nagpur were declared as 'critical cities' for
rise in bird-hit cases.
A NBCC release said that in a meeting last week the panel decided to impose a fine of Rs1 lakh on anyone found dumping solid waste near the airfield.
"The authorities have amended the rules to now impose a fine of Rs1 lakh or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months or both for offence of leaving any animal, object or bird in the movement area of an aerodrome," said the release.
Thought the AMC officials are yet to get the communiqué from the NBCC they say they have decided to impose heavy fine on the violators.
Principal secretary, environment and forest department, SK Nanda told
DNA that they have not received any official communication on the issue.
"The amount of fine is yet to be decided. But, heavy fine will be charged from people who are caught dumping garbage near the airport. In Ahmedabad, the civic body will collect the fine," said Nanda.
As per the norms a slaughter house cannot be set up within 15 km radius of the airport.
The same holds true for dumping garbage. The AMC, meanwhile, has taken an initiative to convince citizens living near the airport to co-operate and not dump kitchen waste in the open.
After a meeting with the AMC, the citizens have agreed to co-operate and dispose their kitchen waste through the civic body's door to door garbage collection facility. The civic body has also sealed two butcher shops near the airport.
