Bypoll Results 2016 from Bihar, MP, UP, Punjab, Karnataka and Telangana: BJP and allies win 7 out of 12 seats

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and allies registered a thumping victory by bagging seven out of the 12 seats in the by-polls held across the nation. The BJP won seats in Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh), Devdurga and Hebbal (both in Karnataka) and Maihar (Madhya Pradesh) while its allies Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) and Shiv Sena won from Khadoor Sahib (Punjab), Harlakhi (Bihar) and Palghar (Maharashtra) respectively.
The Congress, on the other hand, managed to win in just two seats ‘ Deoband (UP) and Bidar (Karnataka). In a major setback for the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP and Congress snatched one seat each from it in the by-polls for three assembly seats. Congress’ Mawaia Ali won the Deoband seat by a margin of 3,424 votes defeating his nearest rival Meena Rana of the SP.
In Karnataka, by-elections were held in Devadurga (ST), Bidar, Hebbal assembly constituencies. While the BJP won in Hebbal and Devadurga seats, the Congress emerged victorious in Bidar. 
In Maihar Assembly constituency in Madhya Pradesh, BJP's Narayan Tripathi won against his nearest Congress rival Manish Patel.

Palghar (ST) Assembly, Maharasthra

Update: Shiv Sena candidate Amit Ghoda wins by defeating Congress nominee Rajendra Gavit by around 19,000 votes. 

Counting of votes for the Palghar (ST) Assembly by-polls will be held tomorrow where Shiv Sena's Amit Ghoda is pitted against Congress's Rajendra Gavit. The by-polls was necessitated following the death of sitting Shiv Sena MLA Krishna Arjun Ghoda. Ghoda passed away on May 24, 2015 following a heart attack and his son Amit was given a ticket by the Sena for these polls. Out of the total electorate of 2.47 lakh voters, 65.24 per cent had cast their ballot on the polling day - February 13.

The polling percentage in this bye-election has come down in comparison to the 2014 Assembly elections, when it was 68.8 per cent. Though it is a multi-cornered contest the real contest is between Amit Ghoda and Congress candidate, former Maharashtra minister Rajendra Gavit.

The other contestants in the fray include former Sena leader Manisha Nimkar who is this time contesting on a Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) ticket, Chandrakant Vartha (CPI-M) and Dileep A Dumada (Bahujan Mukti Party).

Harlakhi Assembly Bihar

Update: RLSP (NDA) candidate Sudhanshu Shekhar wins with 18,000 votes. 
 
The counting of votes for the by-poll in Harlakhi Assembly constituency in Bihar's Madhubani District began amid tight security arrangements on Tuesday morning.

As per latest reports, Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) candidate Sudhanshu Shekhar leading is by 2600 votes in Harlakhi. The by-poll in Harlakhi Assembly was held on February 14 following the death of RLSP MLA Basant kumar. A total of nine candidates are in fray for the assembly constituency. Meanwhile, counting of votes is also underway in Maihar Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh's Satna district, where the polls were held on Saturday. A total of 15 candidates are in fray for the by-poll, although the main contest is between the Congress and the BJP. As per latest reports, BJP's Narayan Tripathi is ahead of Congress' Manish Patel by over 1800 votes in Maihar.

Update: In Madhya Pradesh, BJP's Narayan Tripathi is leading in Maihar assembly seat by around 13, 000 votes.


Over 72 per cent voter turnout was registered in the Maihar assembly seat bypoll in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. "Over 72 per cent voters have exercise d their franchise till 5 PM. The polling was peaceful," a public relations department official said.

Though 15 candidates are in the fray, the main contest is between BJP and Congress. BJP has fielded Narayan Tripathi who had won the seat in 2013 on Congress ticket before joining BJP in 2014 during the parliamentary elections. The bypoll was necessitated as Tripathi resigned his seat after joining BJP.Congress has fielded former BSP leader Manish Patel who had secured third position in 2013 election, polling more than 40,000 votes.

BSP has fielded former MLA Ram Lakhan Singh Patel and Samajwadi Party has fielded Ram Niwas Urmalia. The counting of votes will take place on February 16. There are a total of 2,27,803 registered voters in the constituency.

The administration had deployed six companies of the central para-military forces in addition to the police to ensure peaceful voting.

Update: Ruling SAD's Ravinder Singh Brahmpura wins the seat by a margin of 65, 664 votes. 
 

Ruling SAD won the bypoll to Khadoor Sahib Assembly seat, with party candidate Ravinder Singh Brahmpura defeating his nearest rival Independent candidate Bhupinder Singh by a margin of 65,664 votes.
Main opposition parties Congress and Aam Aadmi Party had stayed out of the contest.


Brahmpura defeated Bhupinder Singh, who had broken away from the Congress and entered the fray as an Independent.
Punjab's Chief Electoral Officer V K Singh said that at the end of 15 rounds of counting, Brahmpura had polled 83,080 votes as against 17,416 in favour of Bhupinder.
"Ravinder Brahmpura has won by 65664 votes," he said.
Another Independent candidate Sumel Singh Sidhu could only poll 2,243 votes. He had parted ways with AAP to contest the poll.
The bypoll was held as the seat fell vacant after Congress MLA Ramanjit Singh Sikki resigned in protest against sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib last year.
Congress had "boycotted" the polls, saying the issue on which Sikki had resigned was still unresolved.

Counting of votes for the Khadoor Sahib assembly seat in Punjab would be taken up tomorrow. 58 per cent voting was witnessed in the bypoll to Khadoor Sahib assembly seat in Tarn Taran district on February 13, an official spokesman for the Election Commission said. The bypoll was necessitated after Congress MLA Ramanjit Singh Sikki resigned last year in protest against sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib. There were seven contestants in the fray but among the main political parties, only Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has put up his candidate. Congress and AAP did not field any candidate for the bypoll. Ravinder Singh Brahampura, son of Akali stalwart, Ranjit Singh Brahampura is contesting on SAD ticket. The six others are Puran Singh of BSP (Ambedkar) and Independents - Sumel Singh Sidhu (AAP rebel), Bhupinder Singh Bittu (Congress rebel), Sukhdev Singh, Harjit Singh and Anantjit Singh Sandhu.

As per current trends, BJP's Y A Narayana Swamy in Hebbal is leading with 37,640 votes, while Rahman Shariff has secured 21,469 and JD(S) candidate Ismail Sharieff Nana 2,515 votes.

Ten candidates are in the fray in Bidar, three in Devadurga and 20 in Hebbal.

Of the three seats, BJP had held Hebbal and Bidar and Congress Devadurga.

By-elections to three Assembly constituencies and first phase of Zilla and Taluk Panchayats polls in 15 districts of Karnataka were held today, in what could prove to be a crucial test for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. By-elections were held for Hebbal, Bidar and Devadurga seats as had fallen vacant due to death of sitting members. According to the office of Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka, an estimated 66 per cent polling was reported in Devadurga, 61 per cent in Bidar and 48 per cent in Hebbal constituency. In all the three constituencies, there is a direct fight between ruling Congress and opposition BJP. Till recently, Hebbal and Bidar constituencies were represented by BJP members, and Devadurga by Congress member. Political infighting in former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda lead JD(S) has reduced the party's significance in this by-poll.

Hebbal constituency in Bengaluru is crucial for Congress as stakes are high for the party which has fielded C K Abdul Rahman Sharief, grandson of senior party leader C K Jaffer Sharief, against the wishes of Siddaramaiah who had opted for MLC Byrathi Suresh as the candidate. Ten candidates are in the fray for Bidar, three in Devadurga and 20 in Hebbal constituency. The fifteen districts went to polls for ZPs and TPs include: Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagaram, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Chickballapur, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Belagavi, Haveri, Bagalkot, Uttara Kannada, Dharwad and Gadag. A total of 2,087 candidates are in the fray for 550 Zilla Panchayat seats and 6,288 candidates for 1,934 Taluk Panchayat seats.

Sangareddy, Telanagana

​Update: TRS candidate Bhupal Reddy leading by 7000 votes in third round of counting. 

TRS candidate Bhupal Reddy established an early lead over Congress rival Sanjeeva Reddy, as counting of votes began today for Narayankhed Assembly seat bypoll in Telangana's Medak district. Bhupal Reddy was leading from the first round itself and was ahead by 7,302 votes after the completion of third round of counting. He got 12,642 votes so far, followed by Sanjeeva Reddy who secured 5,340 votes till the latest counting report.

The by-election was necessitated due to the death of Sanjeeva Reddy's father and sitting Congress MLA Krishna Reddy.More than 81 per cent polling was recorded in the by-election held on Saturday.With inputs from agencies
