A 48-year-old man from Pune, who shot to fame for making the most expensive fashion statement by wearing a gold shirt, was kidnapped from his house and brutally attacked with stones late night on Thursday.

Dattatray Phuge, known as the ‘goldman’ from Pimpri-Chinchwad had become popular in 2012 after he was spotted wearing a shirt made up of 22-carat pure gold which was worth a whopping Rs 1.27crore. 

On Thursday night, four-five unidentified men reportedly entered his house and forcefully took him away with them to Bharatmata nagar in Dighi and attacked him with stones and sharp weapons, former Corporator from the Nationalist Congress Party and Phuge's wife, Seema, told police.

Phuge had floated a chit fund through which he collected money from several investors. He was also involved in an argument with some people 8 to 10 days prior to the incident, reported Lokmat news. 

Police have recovered sharp weapons from the crime spot and have arrested four people.

Known for his penchant for gold, Phuge self-admittedly used to wear gold ornaments weighing 7 kg in his daily life. His gold shirt was made of 14,000 gold spangles interwoven with 1 lakh rings on a specially imported white velvet cloth.

The shirt was designed by city-based Ranka Jewellers, who employed 15 skilled artisans from West Bengal.
