Sub-inspector Munir Shaikh was arrested on December 22 for illegally detaining the maid and allegedly driving her to attempt suicide.

A domestic help, who attempted suicide after being illegally detained in a suburban police station, died while undergoing treatment in a private hospital, police said today.

Sub-inspector Munir Shaikh attached to the Malwani Police Station was arrested on December 22 for illegally detaining the maid and allegedly driving her to attempt suicide.

Shaikh is out on bail now.

"The maid Kunda Shinde, who was on ventilation in Raksha hospital after she tried to commit suicide by hanging, died last night. Now abatement to suicide charges would be added against the policeman," Jaydeep Surve, inspector at Malwani Police Station said.

Police have also moved an application before a local court, who granted bail to the accused, to cancel his bail, Surve said.

According to police, sub-inspector Shaikh summoned Kunda Shinde, a resident of Madh Island, to the police station on December 20 and detained her after a woman complained that she had stolen her jewellery.

The woman did not register a formal complaint and instead requested Shaikh to use his powers to retrieve her ornaments. Shaikh did not inform his superior about Shinde's detention and forced her to spend a night in a room at the police station.

The next day, Shinde was alone in the room when she hanged herself using a rope she found nearby. A woman constable there promptly raised an alarm and Shinde was immediately rushed to the private hospital where she died last night.
