A 32-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in Udhagamandalam town of Tamil Nadu today after he reportedly lost heavily in betting on a match in the ongoing IPL Twenty20 cricket tournament.
The body of CV Mahesh, a travel agent, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in his house this morning, police said.
According to a complaint lodged by his brother, Rajkumar, Mahesh had told him that he had lost nearly Rs3 lakh in betting, being organised by two persons, on the match yesterday. (Deccan Chargers defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the match).
Those involved in the betting reportedly threatened him with dire consequences if he failed to pay the money immediately, the complaint said.
Seeking the duo's arrest, relatives and friends refused to receive the body from Government Hospital in Udhagamandalam after postmortem. However, on an assurance from police, the body was accepted later.
Police are investigating, they said.
